Martial Arts FAQ

Straightforward answers for people considering their first Japanese Ju-Jitsu class in Muswell Hill.

Before your first class

Do I need martial arts experience?

No. Complete beginners can learn the foundations gradually, with techniques explained and demonstrated before controlled practice.

Do I need to get fit first?

No. Start at a manageable level and let your fitness build through regular training. Tell the instructor about any relevant health or movement concerns.

What should I wear?

For a first class, a T-shirt with shorts or tracksuit bottoms is suitable. Remove watches and jewellery, and tape or remove piercings before training.

Do I need a uniform immediately?

No uniform requirement has been confirmed for a first visit. Ask when booking what the instructor would like you to wear.

When do classes train?

What is Japanese Ju-Jitsu?

It is a broad martial art that includes strikes, throws, joint locks, escapes, breakfalls, controlling techniques and practical self defence.

Is it the same as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

No. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu commonly focuses more heavily on ground grappling. Japanese Ju-Jitsu usually covers a wider mix of standing, throwing, locking, striking and self-defence skills.

Will martial arts guarantee my safety?
