Everyone starts somewhere

Martial Arts for Complete Beginners

No experience, special fitness level or knowledge of Ju-Jitsu is required. Your first job is simply to arrive and learn the first step.

Your first class, made straightforward

Tell the instructor that you are new. You will be shown the training space and guided through the fundamentals at a sensible pace. Techniques are explained, demonstrated and then practised with control.

Wear comfortable sports clothing for your first visit. A T-shirt with shorts or tracksuit bottoms is suitable; remove watches and jewellery before training.

You do not need to…

  • Get fit before you begin
  • Know martial arts terminology
  • Be naturally flexible
  • Keep up with experienced students
  • Commit before you have tried it

Common first-class worries

“I’m too old.”

Training can be adapted to ability. Ask the instructor about anything affecting how you move.

“I won’t be fit enough.”

Fitness develops through training. Begin at a sustainable pace and improve over time.

“Everyone will know more.”

Experienced students were once beginners too. Mixed experience can make a class more supportive.

What you will begin learning

  • Safe movement
  • Balance
  • Breakfalls
  • Escapes
  • Basic strikes
  • Throws
  • Locks
  • Partner safety

You will not master everything in one session—and you are not expected to. Progress is the result of regular, attentive practice.

Katie McDade describes the training environment as friendly and welcoming.
